“We’re not just planting coral. We’re rebuilding the language of the reef—microbes, fish, flow, light, chemistry—everything that makes a reef alive.”
Dr. Aaron Hartmann
Lead Senior Scientist

Bio Summary:

  • Dr. Aaron Hartmann is a marine ecologist and coral reef restoration expert with over 15 years of experience advancing ecosystem resilience and biodiversity. He currently serves as a Research Associate and Lecturer in Harvard University’s Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology. His research integrates coral reproduction, reef ecology, and restoration technology, with a focus on enhancing climate change resilience.
  • Dr. Hartmann co-developed the Coral Reef Arks concept alongside Dr. Forest Rohwer, aiming to restore coral reefs by translocating a larger proportion of reef diversity and providing new habitats with improved physical conditions.
  • His academic journey includes a Ph.D. and M.S. in Marine Biology from Scripps Institution of Oceanography and a B.S. in Biology from the University of Vermont. Dr. Hartmann's interdisciplinary approach and commitment to integrating ecological knowledge with practical restoration efforts make him a leader in coral reef conservation.

Focus Areas

  • Marine Conservation
  • Restoration ecology
  • Coral reef ARMS deployments

Role at Coral Reef Arks

  • Aaron was one of the co-designers of the Arks concept. He now leads our research and testing efforts in Madagascar.
